Adam Agee & Jon Sousa: Suantraí

P.S. If you enjoy the album, you can write a review on our CD Baby page and let everyone know what you think. This helps us out!

Adam and Jon began playing together in Boulder, Colorado, through the Irish music session scene in 2005. Moving to Ireland in 2008 to further immerse themselves in the music, land, and culture, they lived in Ennis, County Clare, taking part in the vibrant session community there while Jon earned his master’s degree in Traditional Irish Music Performance at the University of Limerick. Moving back to Boulder in 2009, they continued to hone their sound as a duo. They now tour in the United States and internationally. Adam and Jon regularly offer full-day workshops in European International schools and enjoy bringing the music they love to children.

In recent years, they have appeared at Colorado’s Spanish Peaks International Celtic Music Festival, where they performed on stage with Martin Hayes, Dennis Cahill, John Doyle, Robbie O’Connell, and others. They were also honored to headline at the first annual Durango Celtic Festival in March of 2013.

Adam Agee’s fiddle music is alive, dynamically fluid, and colorful. Raised in the mountains of Santa Cruz, California and Boulder, Colorado, Adam came first to Ireland in 2004, basing himself in Ennis, County Clare, where he discovered a new home. Through opportunities in America and Ireland, he has had the chance to study with many of today’s living tradition-bearers. His exposure to diverse influences makes Adam’s music deeply American, while his pursuit of sound has led him to focused expression through the Irish tradition. Within the rapidly developing culture of traditional music, suffused and enriched by a global exchange of ideas, Adam’s fiddle playing is grounded in a personal, aesthetic quest. He has been teaching and performing for 15 years.

Jon Sousa fell in love with music at an early age, listening to the 70’s folk albums in his mother’s record collection. He journeyed on to rock music, passed through the realm of electronic dance music, then made his way on to West African percussion, and finally landed in the world of traditional Irish music. Jon’s passion for music has taken him all over the world, from the beautiful countryside of France to study with master fingerstyle guitar player Pierre Bensusan, to Senegal, West Africa, to study Sabar Drumming, and eventually to reside in Ireland in 2008. There he refined his skills in interpreting Irish music while earning his Master of Arts degree in Traditional Irish Music Performance at the University of Limerick.

Jon also has a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado.

Adam and Jon provide lively and engaging instructional workshops for music festivals and camps, and also offer full-day and half-day school workshops.

“Irish Music with Jon and Adam is an experience not to be missed. These young men spent the day at our school and had our entire school community dancing reels, slipjigs and jigs to the tunes they masterfully created. They had all our students (aged 3-12) enthused and interested in their strange and exotic instruments and creative stories. After school, they set up in our courtyard and entertained the students as they left for the day and had the parents, the staff, and even the neighbors enthralled with the beautiful sounds they create.

Throughout the many workshops given that day, Jon and Adam demonstrated natural teaching ability as well as incredible energy, talent and an obvious commitment to the power and beauty of the Arts.
Highly recommended!”

—Danielle Beaulieu, Primary School Principal, International School of Paris

“The Helen Sharman School was visited by the musicians Jonathan Sousa and Adam Agee on Friday, October 22nd. Jonathan and Adam were invited to provide two Irish music workshops, firstly to children aged 4-7 and afterwards to a group of 8-11 year olds.

The workshops covered the different rhythms within traditional Irish music and demonstrated the playing of the violin and guitar. At the end of the afternoon, parents were invited to join the children for a performance by the musicians.

Adam and Jonathan have a calm, gentle manner with the children and encourage them to volunteer their ideas. The part of the workshops which covered rhythm and beats was done so in an unforgettable way, very much at the children’s level. They used humour in their demonstrations of the use of their instruments as well as playing beautifully for the children. Both age ranges responded very well and retained much of the information.

The performance which the whole school was treated to at the end of the day was just that: a real treat. The children sat in silence, completely mesmerised, and there were many foot-tapping parents. It brought the school half term to a very warm climax and sent everyone home smilingly ready for their holiday.

I would recommend Jonathan and Adam for both workshops for small groups of children as well as for performances. For further information, do not hesitate to contact us.”

—Sue Beattie, Head Teacher at the Helen Sharman School. Assen, Netherlands.
